President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi is set to attend the coronation of King Charles III in the United Kingdom, accompanied by a 78-member delegation. The coronation is scheduled to take place on 6th May.
Chakwera received an invitation from the UK to attend the coronation, and it is expected that the hosts will cover the costs for Chakwera and approximately six members of his entourage. However, the Malawian taxpayer will bear the expenses for the remaining members of the delegation.
The Malawian leader, known for his frequent travels, was in Zimbabwe last week to attend a one-day summit. In 2021, Chakwera sparked controversy when he travelled to the UK with a 10-member delegation, which included First Lady Monica Chakwera, his assistant and son-in-law Sean Kampondeni, and his daughter Violet Chakwera.
Malawi is currently grappling with a fuel crisis, as petrol stations across the country run dry, resulting in long queues at the few operational filling stations. The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority attributes the crisis to delays in loading fuel at ports in Mozambique and Tanzania.
