Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Kindness Paradza, has affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and friendly operating environment for journalists as well as ensuring journalist freedom in Zimbabwe. Speaking at the Zimbabwe Community News Awards ceremony in Harare, Paradza condemned the spread of fake news by emerging digital media platforms and emphasized the importance of journalists operating within the laws of the country.
Paradza, a former journalist and Makonde MP, highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting a safe media environment and journalist freedom in Zimbabwe, including the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act. He also stressed the need for media practitioners to abide by national laws in order to enjoy the freedom of the press.
Several notable journalists and media personalities, including Alpha Media Holdings acting editor-in-chief Kholwani Nyathi, Zimbabwe Independent editor Faith Zaba, and Heart & Soul Television reporter Chengeto Chidi, were honored with merit awards at the ceremony. The Zimbabwe Community News Awards are in their third year and aim to celebrate the country’s diversity and success through honoring media personnel, celebrities, church leaders, and decision-makers.
Organizer Albert Masaka emphasized the significance of the awards in connecting and aligning with the community to create meaningful change. The government’s commitment to a safe operating environment for journalists and journalist freedom in Zimbabwe remains a priority, as the media plays a crucial role in promoting democracy and transparency in the country ahead of the 2023 elections.
