Namibia mourns the loss of President Hage Geingob, who passed away on Sunday while undergoing medical care at the age of 82, as announced by his office.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the Namibian presidency conveyed that despite the dedicated efforts of Geingob’s medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital, the President succumbed to his condition with his wife, Monica Geingos, and children at his side.
Geingob had been battling cancer and was undergoing treatment at the time of his passing. His office revealed that the 82-year-old underwent a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy, as disclosed last month.
Angolo Mbumba, acting president of Namibia, urged for composure and solidarity, asserting in the same statement that the Cabinet would promptly assemble to make requisite state arrangements in light of the President’s demise.
Geingob had served as the President of the southern African nation since 2015 and was poised to conclude his second and final term in office this year. Notably, in 2014, he publicly disclosed his successful battle against prostate cancer.
As Namibia prepares for its upcoming elections to select a new leader in November, the nation reflects on Geingob’s legacy and contributions to its political landscape.
