George Afriyie, the ex-Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has formally declared his intention to run for the GFA Presidency.
Full details of his bid are scheduled to be announced on Sunday, June 25, 2023. With the campaign slogan, “Empowering Progress: Beacon of Leadership and Transformation,” Afriyie is setting out to bring about positive changes within the organisation.
This isn’t the first time Afriyie has sought the GFA presidency. He previously contested for the role in the 2019 elections but lost to Kurt Okraku. However, not disheartened by the previous loss, the President and owner of Tafo-based Planners Athletic Club is resolute in his quest to win the esteemed position of GFA boss. As Okraku’s mandate is due to expire in October 2023, it is expected that numerous football administrators will step forward to run for the post of the next FA President.
Afriyie is the latest figure to declare his ambition to take on the role of GFA President, following Kojo Yankah’s recent announcement of his intentions to vie for the presidency.
The GFA has yet to confirm the precise date of the elections. However, details of the election modalities are anticipated to be released shortly, with football administrators set to gather at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi on July 10, 2023, for the 29th Ordinary Congress of the association.
Albert Ayittey Commey, a prominent Ghanaian football administrator, has shared his views on Afriyie’s decision to contest the GFA presidential election. In an interview with Oyerepa FM, Commey challenged Afriyie to detail his achievements during his tenure as Vice President of the association. Commey suggested that Afriyie is no threat to incumbent GFA President Kurt Okraku in the upcoming presidential election.
Commey stated, “I saw that tape and I laughed because I have worked with him and he should tell us what he was able to do with his four years as GFA vice. I want him to get the opportunity one day and see what he can do. He is no threat to Kurt Okraku.”
Apart from George Afriyie, Kojo Yankah has also declared his intent to challenge Kurt Okraku for the GFA Presidency. Whilst Okraku is confident of re-election, his opponents argue that he has underperformed and should not be granted a second term.
